Safety Glass
Chesham Glass & Glazing Ltd make glass for use in high risk areas such as bathrooms, stairs, balustrades, doors and glass furniture. There are two types of safety glass; laminated and toughened.
Grade A Safety Glass complies to New Zealand Safety Standards NZS 4223:Part 3
and AS/NZS 2208.
Laminated
Laminated glass consists of two or more sheets of glass permanently
bonded together by a resin or plastic interlayer. This bond keeps glass
intact when broken. This characteristic significantly reduces the
likelihood of serious injury. Such glass qualifies as Grade A
Safety Glass
Laminated Glass is a good choice for safety and protection. It
also has other uses such as noise control, climate control and UV
protection. It can be produced in a range of colours and tints
with minimal visible distortions.
Toughened
Toughened glass, also referred to as tempered glass, is glass that
has been thermally toughened. Glass is heated to temperatures of
around 650°C where it becomes like plastic. The glass is then
rapidly cooled which induces high compression stress on the surface with
tension in the centre. These additional stresses cause the glass
to have increased thermal and mechanical strength. Toughened glass
can be up to 5 times stronger than ordinary glass.
